WEST is excited for the opportunity to conduct research funded by the Wind Wildlife Research Fund to determine if the passage of weather fronts can be used to predict hoary bat mortality, with the ultimate goal of developing a tool that could be used to predict periods of increased hoary bat risk based on real-time regional weather data. WEST statisticians will collaborate with research biologists to test hypotheses and quantify the effectiveness of a hoary bat mortality predictor, and with wind energy owners and operators EDF Renewables, BP Wind Energy, Pattern Energy, and AEP Renewables (a wholly owned subsidiary of AEP), providing data and guidance to help shape the tool to ensure it can be implemented.
