WEST Publication: Ungulate Use Before and After Utility-scale Solar Development

WEST Principal Biologist Hall Sawyer is a co-author of the recent research article, “Ungulate Use Before and After Utility-scale Solar Development,” published in British Ecological Society AER Ecological Solutions and Evidence. Multiple lines of evidence were found indicating a decline in pronghorn use near an 80-megawatt solar facility. The study suggests that indirect habitat loss could exacerbate the impacts of solar development on ungulates and potentially complicate the effectiveness of design-based mitigation measures that assume animals will readily utilize habitats adjacent to solar projects.
