Celebrating #BlackBirdersWeek!

Join WEST in celebrating Black Birders Week the week of May 25, 2025! This important initiative strives to amplify voices, sharing stories of Black birders, scientists, and nature enthusiasts to foster a community where everyone feels welcome to explore the beauty and joy of bird watching.

Why was Black Birders Week started?
Black Birders Week was initiated in 2020 by the BlackAFinSTEM Collective in response to a Central Park birdwatching confrontation in which a white woman called the police on a Black birder, Christian Cooper, and filed a false police report. The goal of Black Birders Week is to increase the visibility and representation of Black birders who often face unique challenges and dangers while engaging in outdoor activities.

Share your birding adventures, favorite bird photos, and inspiring stories tagged with #BlackBirdersWeek.
