Reducing Bird Collisions with Distribution, Transmission, and Gen-tie Lines

Avian collisions with power lines, including distribution lines, transmission lines, and generation-tie (gen-tie) lines, can result in power outages, service disruptions, and bird mortality. WEST’s Wildlife–Power Interactions (WPI) Team specializes in developing science-based Avian–Power Line Collision Risk Assessments to evaluate the relative risk of avian collisions and to identify power line segments where collision minimization measures could be applied most effectively.

WEST’s data-driven analysis utilizes a geographic information system (GIS) to overlay landscape-level variables that are likely to either increase the risk of collision, such as favorable habitat and observed bird presence, or to decrease the risk of collision, such as identifying proximity to human development. By relying on our decades of experience with reducing risk of avian collisions, WEST can also assist power line operators with developing line-marking strategies and can provide vendor contact information.
