Paul Rabie (WEST Principal Statistician), Melissa Welsch (WEST Consulting Biologist), Nancy Stone (WEST Associate Data Scientist), and Clayton Derby (WEST CEO) are authors on the recently published article, Novel approach to estimating avian mortality from vehicle–bird collisions on U.S. roads, published in the Journal of Field Ornithology. A study based on driver-reported collisions from 2020 to 2022 estimated about 96 million bird-vehicle collisions annually in the continental USA. The highest collision rates were on rural paved two-lane roads (60 per million km) and the Pacific region (95 per million km). Efforts to reduce collisions should focus on paved two-lane roads.
